Mets Opening Day: A Must Win Game?

With an entire fan base teetering somewhere between depression and spontaneous combustion, the Mets will open their 2010 season on Monday at Citi Field. After the debacle of last summer, a ho-hum winter and a less than stellar spring the Mets fans have seem to have lost their faith. I myself am excited for the first game, but more because I miss the Mets than because I feel excited about our chances this year.
Though the Mets have a great record on Opening Day the crowd isn’t always a kind or patient one. I witnessed a particularly brutal opening day at Shea Stadium on a ridiculous cold and windy day on March 31, 2003. Tom Glavine didn’t get out of the fourth inning and the Mets gave up 15 runs (Ironically, this seems light-years better than his final start as a Met when he didn’t get out of the first inning). The crowd was angry that day and most of that season. With all the ill will towards the team, I wonder if Monday’s game might be the most important opening day in the team’s history. Get off on the right foot and maybe the tone is set for the year. A Glaveine-esqe start by Johan and this crowd could get pretty restless by the fourth inning.
No matter what the season holds, now is time to be excited. There’s a fresh slate of 162 Mets games on the horizon. We’re tied for first place and we already have a better record than the Yankees.
I guess “Ya Gotta Believe!”
